2008 State Champions Merced, CA - Championships are meant to be like todays between the two top teams from the North and South. West Valley from the North and Golden West from the South. A game that saw ebs and flows with each team seemingly pulling out to a lead, only to be caught by their opponent. Entering overtime both teams were tied eleven. Golden West lead by Tournament MVP Emilio Vieira lead an overtime charge that saw them finish the first ot period with a two goal advantage. Defense, and the play by GWC Goalie Toby Devine, the Rustlers held the Vikings to no goals in both overtime periods. Vieira scored a late goal in the second overtime sealing any chance the Vikings had in coming back. Ken Hamdorf inducted into Community College Hall of Fame Coach Ken Hamdorf has been a part of the Golden West College men’s water polo program since 1977, taking over as head coach in 1985, and passing on the reigns in 2001. His dedication to the program and the sport has helped the Rustlers become one of the most dominant community college water polo programs in the nation. |
All-Southern California Team Announced For the 2008 All-Southern California Team, 5 Golden West Players were name along with Southern California MVP, Emilo Vieira. Congratulation to Nate Castillo, Toby Devine, Joao Coelho, and Rex Lermouth on earning All America Honors. Also congratulations to Coach Scott Taylor for earning the distinction of Coach of the Year. Southern California Champions In their 28th Southern California Water Polo Championship appearance, Golden West jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period over Long Beach City. The Rustlers had no trouble finding the back of the net throughout the game. Five Rustlers were able to set the pace with goals coming from Joao Coelho (3), Rex Learmouth (2), Emilio Vieira (2), Ricky Moniz (1), and Nathan Castillo (1). The Vikings struck early in the second period but Golden West matched the intensity and notched 3 more goals before halftime to extend the lead to 6-2. The Rustlers were able to control the flow of the game with their tenacious defense and front court offense. Golden West will travel to Merced College where the 2008 State Championships will be held. Rustlers Take Conference Title The Rustlers eliminate OCC in the Orange Empire Conference Championships to take home their 38th Conference Title. The Rustlers defeated Coast 12-8 in which Golden West will be seeded No. 1 going into Southern California Regional Championships. Games will be hosted at Golden West College on Friday and Saturday. Golden West will face the winner of Saddleback and Cuesta on Friday morning at 9:00AM. |
Golden West Sweeps Cuesta Tournament Golden West Rustlers traveled up the coast to Cuesta to compete against: American River, Chaffey, West Valley and Long Beach. The Rustlers were able to breeze past their opponents on the first day, but took on West Valley and Long Beach on the second day of the tournament. Golden West went down early (4-7) verse West Valley, but was able to compose themselves and rally back to a 12-11 victory. With very little rest between games, the Rustlers faced Long Beach City College for their first match up of the season. From the sounding whistle, the Rustlers controlled the game, jumping on the board early and built a comfortable lead in the first half. Golden West won the match 10-7. Rustlers play host to Fullerton for their first conference game of the 2008 season. Game time is 3:00pm on September 17th. |
Rustlers Go 4-0 In Their First Tournament Of The Season The Golden West Men's Water Polo Team ended last season with a bad taste in their mouth. The 2008 season, the Rustlers look towards sophomore leadership and key freshman starters to feed their counter attack. The Rustlers were able to prevail victorious in their own tournament this past weekend defeating Mt. Sac (14-10), Cerritos (13-7), Grossmont (18-7), and Riverside (14-5). The Rustlers travel up to Cuesta College in San Luis next weekend where they will meet long time rival West Valley. This will be the first of four meetings between these two teams in the 2008 season. |
