The Accounting curriculum provides an intensive program of study designed to meet the needs of both business students transferring to a four-year college or university and vocational students attempting to gain a new skill. The curriculum provides students with instruction in the skills necessary to gain employment in the field of accounting in today’s global business environment and careers in industry (private accounting), public accounting, merchandising, or related fields. The curriculum also provides training in the basic and advanced accounting techniques, computerized accounting, tax specialization, and related subjects.
The Accounting Department stays in close contact with the community with annual Accounting Advisory meetings with community members/potential employers to obtain information regarding the skills desired from our accounting students as they complete the accounting program. As a result, we have added specialized courses and implemented their suggestions in the classroom. Areas of specialization include Accounting Data Entry Specialist, Staff Accountant, and Enrolled Agent Tax Specialist. In addition, this program proves an educational service to local business community and their employees by offering classes in payroll, taxation, forensic accounting, and internal control compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Many accounting courses are articulated for transfer to California State Universities, Long Beach and Fullerton.
The Accounting Department consists of two full time faculty, one full time faculty member teaching 20 percent (one 4-unit class), and ten adjunct instructors. Approximately 20 to 25 sections are offered each fall or spring semester and 6 to 8 sections each summer session. Enrollment goals were met for 05-06 with an enrollment increase of 3.7% over the prior year. Day enrollments increased 8.1% while evening enrollments decreased 5.4%. The Department has met its goal of 3% growth over the prior year.
