Over the next six years California is expected to hire 150,000 to 180,000 new teachers. To meet this increasing demand, a District consortium was established to support the academic efforts of teacher preparation students. In 2004, Golden West institutionalized these efforts by committing to provide leadership, counseling, and course offerings.
Golden West College’s teacher preparation program (Teach3) includes specialized counseling, workshops, a teacher resource center, and content and methodology-specific curriculum. The Education curriculum also offers students an opportunity for fieldwork experiences. A campus Reading Specialist provides tutoring training in EDUC 200 to prepare students for classroom tutoring experiences at the elementary and secondary levels.
Developing a quality teacher preparation program required collaboration in course development and offerings of standards-based courses across campus departments. Enrollment has continued to rise over the past four years.
Our Teacher Resource Center (TRC), located in the Tutoring Center, offers students a centralized place on campus to obtain teaching resources and information. Currently, there are over 912 Golden West College students in the program database identified as teacher preparation. Three full-time Teach3 counselors who regularly update their expertise on teacher credentialing in California serve these 912+ students.
