The goal of the library’s information literacy instructional program is to teach students how to locate, evaluate, and use information for all of their educational needs. These educational needs and goals include transferring to a four-year university, vocational preparedness, improving basic skills, and personal interest.
The library’s instructional program is integrated into virtually every department and division of
Golden
West
College
. The library faculty maintains a strong relationship with GWC faculty and provides expertise in developing library assignments and selecting library materials. As a result, course syllabi incorporate library research projects. Other instructional services include library lectures and consultations with faculty regarding research needs. Librarians teach students through the library’s “just in time” instruction at the reference desk, as well as providing one-time, PowerPoint, assignment-specific lectures. Library courses include Library 110 (Introduction to the Library) and Library 120 (Libraries and the Internet).
Highlights:
- The library provides 24/7 access to the online catalog and databases and librarians are available 24/7 online to help answer reference questions
- Library 110 is an independent study course that allows students to work at their own pace to learn how to research using print and online resources
- Library 120 is an online class that teaches students how to use the Internet and online databases to find relevant, research material
- The Technology Learning Center (TLC) offers students free access to the Internet and Microsoft Office during library hours
- GWC Library staff is working to create “The Library of the Future” and welcomes student input and suggestions
- Librarians are committed to increase faculty support to integrate new library resources and information literacy into the curriculum
