Health Professions Division Nursing Program Application Information

To be eligible for selection to the four semester Generic Nursing Program all applicants must meet the following requirements:

NURSING PROGRAM SELECTION CRITERIA

Eligible applicants who have met the minimum requirements will be selected for the program on the basis of the published selection procedure. Refer to Nursing Program Selection. Eligible applicants who are not selected will retain their initial priority order. However, they must apply to the program each semester until selected or they will lose their priority.

Approximately 50 students are accepted each semester.

NOTIFICATION LETTERS

Notification letters will be sent to applicants following the close of the filing period as follows:
6 weeks - letters indicating applicant's status
12 weeks - conditional acceptance, alternate, and denial letters

Selected Applicants

It is the responsibility of applicants to contact the Impacted Programs Desk if they do not receive these notifications within the deadlines. Upon acceptance, applicants must then fulfill additional requirements including a physical examination.

The results must indicate appropriate physical and emotional health. Accepted applicants will be required to meet the costs of the physical examination, uniforms and accessories in addition to the usual college fees. The start up costs are approximately $1200. Overall costs for the Nursing Program are estimated at approximately $2500.

Non-selected Applicants

Eligible students who are not selected for the Nursing 100 class are encouraged to complete the following co-requisite and general education courses required for the Associate in Arts Degree while they wait to enter the program. It has been found that once in the program, nursing students are much more successful if these classes are already completed.

English 100 - Freshman Composition
Sociology 100 - Introduction to Sociology
Speech 108 (Introduction to Communication),110 (Public Speaking) or 112 (Small Group Dynamics)
Psychology 160 - Growth and Development
Biology 200 - Pharmacology

All of the above courses are required for the Associate Degree in Nursing. Additional courses to be completed include P.E. and Humanities.

Note: Golden West College offers a class called "Physiology and Disease," (Biology 160) which is not a requirement and transfers to the university only as an elective. However, it is an excellent review of anatomy and physiology and is recommended to the nursing applicant prior to acceptance into the program.
