In addition to state supported colleges and universities in California, there are many fine independent institutions. Each of these institutions has its own unique requirements for admission. In order to determine eligibility, students should obtain a copy of the school catalog and consult with their counselors.

General Education Transfer Requirements

All college degrees require the completion of certain courses that make up what are called general education or breadth requirements. Listed below are these requirements for those schools to which Golden West College students most often transfer. If the college the student is interested in is not listed, he/she should make an appointment with a counselor who can provide this information. It is a good idea for students to obtain a catalog from the college of their choice beforehand and bring it with them to the counseling appointment.

Transfer Requirements-Chapman University

Students who are considering transferring to Chapman should follow the CSU Transfer Pattern as outlined in the Golden West College catalog. Chapman University will accept a maximum of 70 CSU/UC transferrable units. If students have completed full CSU certification, Chapman will waive its general education requirements with the exception of its common requirements - Cross Cultural, Writing Across The Curriculum, Junior Writing Proficiency Exam, and Senior Project. If partial certification in one or more area(s) has been completed, Chapman will accept that work.

Transfer Requirements-University of Southern California

All USC students must complete six general education (GE) courses. In addition, there are requirements in writing, diversity, and (for certain majors) foreign language. Students have different GE and writing requirements depending on when they started college:
–New GE: Students who first enrolled in any college in fall 1997 or later, or who enroll in USC in fall 2000 or later, follow the "New" GE plan. They may use transfer courses to fulfill the lower division writing requirement (shown below), and four of the six GE categories (I, II, III, and V, listed below). GE categories IV and VI and the upper division writing requirement must be taken at USC.
–Transitional GE: Students who enrolled in college in spring 1997 or earlier and who enroll at USC in spring 2000 or earlier follow a "Transitional" GE plan, designed to smooth the transition from the "old" GE to the new plan. They may fulfill all six GE courses with transfer courses: the four categories listed immediately below (I, II, III, and V), and also categories IV and VI listed in the final part of this agreement (titled "THIS SECTION IS ONLY FOR STUDENTS ELIGIBLE FOR THE TRANSITIONAL GE PLAN"). They may fulfill the entire two-course composition requirement with transfer courses listed in the final part of this agreement.

For more information, see the booklet "Transferring to USC," available from the USC Office of Admission or on the World Wide Web at: http://www.usc.edu/dept/admissions/undergrad/transfer/index.html
The Diversity and Foreign Language requirements described below are the same for students following either the "new" or the "transitional" GE plans.
DIVERSITY REQUIREMENT: All students who entered college in fall 1993 or thereafter (at USC or elsewhere) must meet USC's diversity requirement. Courses which meet the diversity requirement are identified by the abbreviation MULTI.
LOWER DIVISION WRITING REQUIREMENT FOR STUDENTS FOLLOWING NEW GE PLAN: Students following the NEW GE pattern should complete one of the courses below (an additional upper division writing course will need to be completed at USC):
ENGLISH 110
FOREIGN LANGUAGE SKILL LEVEL (New and Transitional GE): Certain USC majors have a language requirement for graduation, which requires completing the third semester (or fifth quarter) of a college-level foreign language with a passing grade (C- or higher), or passing USC's placement examination at a level equivalent to third semester competency. Students who do not finish their third semester (or fifth quarter) before transferring to USC must take USC's placement examination to determine their level of competency. If the test score indicates placement into a level which the student has already completed, the student will be required to repeat the course at USC for no additional credit. Therefore, if your major requires the foreign language skill level and if you have started taking a foreign language, you are advised to complete the requirement before transferring to USC.

THIS SECTION IS ONLY FOR STUDENTS ELIGIBLE FOR THE TRANSITIONAL GE PLAN
Students who entered USC before fall 1997, and transfer students who began college elsewhere no later than spring 1997 and enter USC no later than spring 2000, are eligible to follow the "transitional" GE plan. It requires six courses from at least five of the six new categories (I through VI), each in a different "old" GE Area of Study. Students in the following majors may not omit category III or IV (that is, they must take two science courses, each from a different Area of the natural world and a different department): majors in the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences; Engineering majors; and students earning a B.A. degree in any school.

Students following the transitional GE plan may use transfer courses to fulfill categories I, II, III, and V listed in the previous section of this agreement, and also categories IV and VI, listed below. Courses in these two categories are listed under the "old" Areas of Study which they fulfill. If two courses are taken in any of these categories, they must be from different Areas of Study.
