GWC Will Host Dedication, Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for New Language Arts Complex Oct. 5

LAC - wall with welcoming messages in 15 language

Huntington Beach, Calif. —Golden West College plans to host a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony for its recently completed Language Arts Complex (LAC) on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 3:30 p.m. The ceremony will take place on the east patio of the building next to GWC’s Student Services Center and the program will be followed by a light reception.

At just over 65,000 square feet, the LAC houses the division office for GWC’s Language Arts and faculty offices for both Language Arts and Social Sciences, in addition to 30 standard classrooms including classrooms with HyFlex technology, 10 specialized instructional spaces, a student resource center, and four group study rooms. The building also includes several eco-friendly architectural features, including window and air transfer that provides natural ventilation and light wells that utilize natural lighting.

“The new Language Arts Complex will support a growing demand for sustainable and inclusive learning environments,” says Acting Vice President of Instruction Dr. Kay Nguyen. “The building is equipped with technology and infrastructure to support all modalities of instruction and learning needs. We have HyFlex classrooms that allow simultaneous in-person and online instruction. We also have a Resource Center that give students the opportunity to experience both individual and collaborative study environments.

The LAC also includes architectural and design features that promote an inclusive and welcoming learning environment.

“The new building includes a welcome wall that is translated into multiple languages including Vietnamese, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, and American Sign Language,” says Dr. Nguyen. “Visitors also will see a special skylight featuring a phrase in Esperanto which, translated to English, means ‘the essence of beauty is unity in diversity’.”

The new LAC was funded through both state funding and Measure M, a $698 million bond measure passed by voters in 2012.The total cost of construction was $55 million.

Parking for the dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony will be available in GWC’s Parking Lot C, located on Golden West St. between McFadden Avenue and Edinger Avenue.
