GWC Student Leaders Champion Key Legislative Priorities at ASACC Conference

Huntington Beach, Calif. — A delegation of student leaders from Golden West College recently attended the American Student Association of Community Colleges (ASACC) National Student Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C. Over several days, student leaders engaged in discussions on pivotal issues affecting more than 12 million students across America’s community colleges.

This year, the conference highlighted the DACA/Dream Act, Pell Grant enhancement, and the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act as its top legislative priorities. Holding true to GWC’s commitment to addressing educational and social inequities, Golden West students took these issues to the offices of Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Senator Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.), and Representative Michelle Steel (R-Calif.-45), where they advocated for meaningful changes that could impact the quality of life and futures of community college students nationwide.

The conference provided a platform for students to develop their leadership skills, engage in policy discussions, and strengthen relationships with peers and policymakers.

Highlights included workshops on grassroots organizing, leadership and advocacy, and equipping students with the knowledge and skills to champion their causes effectively.

GWC is proud to support our student leaders in their advocacy efforts. “Our students’ commitment to addressing key issues like the Dream Act, Pell Grants, and the HEA reauthorization reflects the values of our institution and our community,” said President Meridith Randall.

GWC’s student leadership development program continues to be a driving force in preparing and supporting students as leaders in their communities, representing the interests of community college students at the national level.
